150 Best Movies on Netflix Netherlands

There’s a Dutch remake of De Loft from 2010, cinematography looks identical to the Belgian original! The first Dutch Netflix Original movie called “Forever Rich” is currently in production (I believe they’re expecting to finish filming this February).

Movie is set to be released somewhere this year so look out for that one on Netflix😊

Best Movies From The Netherlands

There are a few dutch movies that I missed in your list. The Oscar winning ones for example. From the top of my head there were seven or eight? ‘Glas’ ‘Karakter’, ‘Deze kleine wereld’. ‘Anna en Bella’, ‘De Aanslag’. ‘Antonia’ and ‘Father and Daughter’.

But there is also ‘The Red Turtle’. Technically a Japanese production but totally made by the dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit.

And the latest hit in dutch cinema: ‘De beentjes van sint-hildegard’. A bit challenging because it is in dialect so even many dutch speakers will need subtitles.

Best Movies From The Netherlands

As a Dutch guy I never appreciated Dutch cinema a lot until I fell by accident in the TV business and through that in film.

Because of that I became extremely appreciative. An American production or even a commercial here have so much more money to spend per minute than Dutch cinema and its rather creative how they manage to do all that with such small crews and budgets.

Best Dutch Movies On Netflix

I really enjoyed this video!! I am a film buff myself so I love to watch these types of videos. I saw someone mention it in the comments already, but check out “The Vanishing”. It is a Dutch movie from 1988.

I didn’t know about the film until I saw a list of Stanley Kubrick’s favorite films and all of a sudden I saw the title “Spoorloos” which is the Dutch title of “The Vanishing”. I was like what the heck! haha.

Then I watched it and now it is one of my favorite Dutch films. It was actually send in for best foreign language film at The Oscars, but was turned downby the academy because the film contained too much French dialogue 🙁 Stanley Kubrick apparently said he found it to be one of the scariest films he had seen.

He liked it so much that he cast Dutch actress Johanna Ter Steege (he allegedly also considered Julia Roberts and Uma Thurman) who played one of the lead roles in Spoorloos to play in his film “Aryan Papers”.

Eventually the production of “Aryan Papers” was ceased because allegedly Kubrick thought it would suffer commercially after the success of Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List”.

As a Dutch film student, I feel like Dutch cinema really thrives in it’s visuals and in it’s sound. Most technical aspects in bigger Dutch films are well or great, but when it comes to story and acting, We don’t have too much to offer yet.

Every once in a while a film comes out which does these aspects well but the vast majority, which only gets bigger as the budgets get bigger, really lack in these departments which is sad to see.

There are people like the comedic duo Rundfunk, who’ve made one tv show and one film now, who really experiment in all aspects and a lot of it is done very well.

They make these almost surreal stories with strange stories and intentional over the top acting that, while not always great, can be really refreshning to see.

They even take a more experimental approach to the visuals in their film, where they’ve given it all a very warm feeling and they use these fisheye lenses for extra comedic effect in close ups which just works.

so well and while they certainly have their flaws, they’re much more exciting than any other Dutch filmmaker to me because they try stuff out and they really have their own voice instead of a studio’s voice.
